Oh dear god in heaven above
Just saw the new Star Trek movie Into Darkness but GODDAMMIT JIM IT WAS FANTASTIC
I absolutely LOVE the way that Benedict portrays Khan. He gave the character a likeablility in the beginning- fighting Star Fleet to save his people- but then takes the betrayal to a cut-throat, malicious level. I adored how he could be calm and calculating one moment then brutally beating the shit out of someone the next second and crushing their skulls in. The pure hatred in Khan’s eyes as he attack Admiral Marcus is the brilliance of watching Benedict’s acting, knowing that the real man behind the character is a true sweetheart but can play that kind of evil… I can’t even begin to express my admiration and awe for his skill.
Don’t even get me started on Spock either. I cannot think of Spock without crying or at least having a miniature heart seizure from the inescapeable bout of raw emotion from watching him cry in 3D. I nearly died from my heart exploding in “feels” during the warp core chamber scene with Spock and Kirk. And when the infamous “KHAAAAAAAAAAAAANN” line was delivered, I felt that grief, that anger, the hatred, the pure primal instict to exact revenge ten-fold upon any adversary, the desire- no NEED to kill the man who caused his best friend’s untimely death. I felt Spock’s determination to hunt down Khan and beat the everloving shit out of him, until that bastard begged for mercy, and the implied pleasure in having avenged Kirk’s death. All that from one line. I clap to you Zachary Qunito, and I shall keep clapping until my hands are stripped of flesh and only bone continues to collide again and again and again and again.
I wish for three things: that the movies would keep showing that movie all night, I didnt need to sleep, and I had enough money to watching this movie until I now every line and sound effect and can quote this masterpiece even as my grandchildren complain in my later years of me becoming an old senile hag that only remembers a movie she sae as a teenager instead of their names (“KHAAAAAAAAAAN” “Grandma my name is Charlie!”).
Kudos to the entire cast, you were fantastic. Recommendation: GO FUCKING WATCH THIS MOVIE ASAP.

So, I paint my nails pretty regularly these days. I also work as a barista/cashier pretty regularly these days. A few weeks back, I had a customer come in, a fairly typical, sheltered, suburban soccer mom, and she ordered a latte from me. She saw my brightly colored nails and said, “Wow, you’re so brave! My son asked me about painting his nails, and if it’s okay for boys to do that. Now I’ll tell him there’s a cool guy who does it too!” It was a nice moment, very cute.

Then, last week, she came in again, and said, “Hey, I’m so glad you’re here! I want you to meet someone!” She then brings her son forward, and says, “Okay sweetie, show him what you did!” And he throws his hands up, showing off his bright, sparkling blue nails. He shows them off, and I show mine off to him. He smiles. We fist bump.

Guys, I’ve only wanted to cry once at work before, and that was when someone ordered a large dry soy cappuccino on ice.

This time, though. This was a good cry.

I don’t know this man or this mom, but I love them both.

Hold on just a tick. Listen, I’m Jewish, so I’m perfectly capable of understanding that what he did was just…..well, there are no words for it. But let’s not round it up to simply Jews that got killed. It was six million people that died in those camps, not just Jews. Did you know that homosexuals were sent there, too? Yeah, I’m sure you did. They had to wear special little symbols on their clothes. Do you know what it was? It was a pink triangle.

It was six million PEOPLE.

But you let that roll over in your mind for a while and you are going to forever see this man as a monster, but that’s not what he was. He was someone who thought he was truly doing something right for his nation, no matter how shitty he was doing it. Believe me when I say that I don’t like him. I really don’t. My grandfather’s brothers died in those camps, and my grandfather escaped to Spain, then to Mexico. He was lucky.

This is not a monster holding hands with a little girl.

Yeah. It’s fucking scary. It really is. Do you know why?

It’s because you’re seeing that he wasn’t, in fact, a monster. You’re seeing in this picture that he was a man. He was a man, and that’s really the saddest part of it all.

As a History major who specializes in the history of early modern Europe, I’ve studied a lot of dictators in detail, not just Hitler. The number one mistake anyone could ever make in history is making the assumption that only inhuman monsters are capable of doing terrible things.

Stop dehumanizing Hitler just so you can reassure yourself that “normal” humans aren’t capable of doing bad things. Hitler liked children and dogs, he was a vegetarian and he cried like a little boy when his mother died. I’m not saying he was a good, innocent person, but when you stop attributing human characteristics to historical figures like Hitler, it’s how you overlook people just like him in real life, and it’s how people like him end up back in power.

That’s the real truth: Human Beings are scarier than any ‘monsters’ out there because we’re all born blank slates and BECOME our legacy.
